Finally, seven more ruffed grouse join the world

It seemed to take them forever but the seven eggs under our faithful mother grouse joined the world today!

Just returned from Central Asia, when my builders uncovered a nest like this under the tarp covering a stack of lumber. Mom had hollowed out a bowl in the gravel at the edge of my driveway, lined it with dry grasses, and laid 5-6 thick-walled eggs. All hatched and the hatchlings gone, leaving only some soft grayish feathers, by the time we found the nest. Amazing, in view of the numerous dogs and foxes that patrol right by the nest site!
